Ran across this image on Twitter today, which was posted by Dr. Ryan Maue. He is a PhD originally from FSU who now works for a private company. Anyway, he makes some awesome model graphics, statistics, and maps for this company named weatherbell. A controversial Meteorologist forecasts for them, but do not let that stop you from viewing this image. Ryan is very knowledgeable on the science.
As you can see, the GFS verification at 500 mb in the Northern Hemisphere has dropped significantly recently. Just because the model is run on a new supercomputer does not guarantee it will be better. Hopefully the upgrades to the actual model coming soon will help take advantage of the new supercomputer.
Update: He just tweeted a new update with verification for 00z Aug 30. Its even worse with a anomaly correlation of 0.57.
