Hello and welcome to MetScholars, an online discussion board with the purpose of connecting students and young professionals in meteorology!
MetScholars is short for "Meteorology Scholars". The definition of "scholar" is a person who is highly educated or has an aptitude for study. A synonym for "scholar" is scientist. As students of meteorology or atmospheric science, we all share a passion and aptitude for the discipline. Some programs are at small colleges or universities, and unless you go to national meetings, you may feel isolated. This discussion board will serve the function of bringing together weather scholars from around the world who may have the same questions, concerns, or interests but don't even know it.
This online discussion board has been developed by graduate students at various institutions to facilitate communication across the country. The main goal of the discussion board is to connect undergraduate meteorology students, graduate students, and young professionals to each other and provide an online medium for academic and professional support. The discussion board is meant to be a resource solely for students and by students, so at this time faculty are asked to play minor roles in the discussion board if they choose to join it.
The objectives of this discussion board are as follows:
- It is maintained by students and for students to connect those studying atmospheric science and meteorology at various levels at colleges and universities around the world.
- It will provide a platform to intelligently discuss hot topics among peers to build confidence and communication skills.
The main page of the discussion board contains all of the topics available to post under that aim to span the breadth of the field of atmospheric science. If you think of a great topic but don't see it listed, feel free to post here about the idea and with enough support it will get created ASAP. In order to post you must create a free ProBoards user account, but that's it! After creating your account you should say hello with a brief introduction in the Introductions thread!
If you have any questions or comments please feel free to post them, message a member of the staff, or if you aren't yet a user you can email me at sara.ganetis@stonybrook.edu. Hopefully MetScholars will become a very useful resource to you as you start your career.
Bring on the great discussion!
