The Saharan Air Layer (SAL), or African Dust, appears to be on the decrease across the Tropical Atlantic Just as the MJO is amplifying with its phase geared towards the Africa and the West Hemisphere. All indicators are showing increased activity into early September. The season so far has generally been tame with only a few tropical storms, several which were very short-lived. Are we beginning to see this change?

The amplification of the MJO in phases 8/1 is what is most notable about this set-up. I'll admit I haven't been following it as closely as I might like, but it definitely looks like we should see some action in the eastern MDR soon.
In general, a few days after the MJO moves out of the region will be a prime period for TC development, so I'm banking on what may be our hottest period mid-late next week. Still not looking all that awesome, at least in comparison to the recent active period of course...
