I guess on a more serious note I will do a more formal introduction myself, mostly because its a Friday and I want to procrastinate! Anyways, I am a Ph.D student at the University of Utah with a broad range of research interests such as numerical weather prediction, fire weather, mountain, air pollution, and synoptic meteorology. Previously, I received my Masters at Plymouth State University and my B.S degree at the University at Albany.
Some of my hobbies:
Cycling Skiing Video games procrastination WRFing
That pretty much sums it up for me!

Haha since everyone else gave wonderful descriptions, I'll flesh out my introduction a bit more. I got my B.S. in meteorology at Iowa State University in 2012, and am on the Atmospheric Science Ph.D. track at the University of Michigan. This summer I worked at NCAR for 3 months in the Advanced Study Program studying orographic precipitation using the CM1 model and a Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm. I'll continue this research for at least the next year or so. I'm not sure I want to go through with the entire Ph.D. thing, so I've been exploring all my options! My favorite animals are wolves, dogs, and dolphins; I sing, play piano, and cross-stitch; and I will camp almost anywhere.

Hi Friends!
My name is Daniel Gilford and I graduated with my B.S. in Meteorology from The Florida State University in 2012. I am now a second year graduate student at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, studying both middle atmosphere chemistry and radiation balance and relationships between thermodynamics and changes in surface human heat stress in the warming climate.
I have met some of you via AMS Fellowship Program or Hollings, and I look forward to interacting with you all on these boards. I am especially excited about the programming aspect, as I do a lot of coding and it's good to interact with others who do. Currently I focus on using MATLAB and IDL.
Have a great day!

Hi Everyone,
My name is Philippe Papin and I'm also currently a graduate student at the University at Albany. I earned my B.S. at the University of North Carolina at Asheville in 2011. My undergraduate work focused on tropical cyclogenesis and using the rossby radius of deformation in better predicting development. My graduate work thus far focuses on large-scale gyre circulations over Central America, attempting to quantify their frequency and antecedent conditions. I am a pretty major weather geek and enjoy forecasting the weather just as much as researching it.
My non-weather interests include golfing, hiking, graphic design, snorkeling, and pretty much anything else that looks like fun!

Hey All,
I'm Chris and I'm a technical first year graduate student at the University at Albany. i obtained my B.S. from UAlbany as well in 2011. My primary interests include natural climate variability, climate change, and tropical meteorology. While I am just as fascinated with the weather as any one else, forecasting is not my gig. I am more interested in why a particular season in any given year may produce anomalous extreme weather events relative to others from a broader perspective. My research will primarily focus on extreme precipitation events and trends in association (if any) with anthropogenic climate change in the Northeast US.
Great idea for a forum, once I saw so many familiar faces I thought I should register and join.

Favorite aspect of meteorology: Marine Meteorology

Post by jdiana on Aug 28, 2013 19:21:06 GMT
Hi everyone. I'm Jen and I received my B.S in Atmospheric Science from SUNY Albany. I currently am a Marine Meteorologist at a private forecast company, FleetWeather. We do marine forecasts for shipping companies across the globe. We provide forecasts for close to 400 ships. This is a very interesting application of weather forecasting that I knew nothing about during college. There werent any marine meteorology classes at UA and it is something Ive gotten a lot of training on at my job. Most people don't know much about the application of weather to the shipping industry and what we do goes far beyond just providing forecasts to ships. Other than work, I love gymnastics, writing and music. While I am not a student at a university any more, I learn something new from operational meteorology every day and love what I do!

Favorite aspect of meteorology: Severe Weather

Post by Tim Cermak on Sept 2, 2013 3:59:44 GMT
Hey everyone,
I'm Tim and I'm a second year M.S. student at Texas Tech University. My current research deals with low level tornado structure and dynamics, something I hope to continue towards a Ph.D. in the not-so-distant future. I'm a Chicago native, and received my B.S. in Atmospheric Sciences from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Besides my research, I like playing/watching sports and cheering anything Chicago related. I also love to storm chase and play/listen to music. I've always been most interested in severe weather, but I've dabbled in research regarding dual-polarization observations during lake-effect snow events as well. As you can probably tell, I'm big into the observational side of the science, rather than the modeling side (though I understand the importance of both). I'm hoping to one day continue my passion of severe weather research as a career, be it for an academic, government, or private institution or organization.

Favorite aspect of meteorology: External influences on tornadoes
|
Post by Tony Lyza on Sept 5, 2013 3:41:11 GMT
Hi all, I'm Tony, and I'm a second-year M.S. student at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. I work as a graduate research assistant under Dr. Kevin Knupp in the newly-formed (and currently under construction) Severe Weather Institute-Radar and Lightning Laboratories (SWIRLL), researching how external influences (i.e. waves, topography, and differential surface roughness) can affect the genesis and evolution of mesocyclones, QLCS mesovortices, and tornadoes. I'm originally from the Chicago area (born in Chicago and raised in the south suburbs/NW IN) and received my B.S. in meteorology from Valparaiso University in May 2012, where I dabbled in QLCS tornado and statistical lake effect snow climatology research. Aside from meteorology, I love listening to music and watching my favorite sports teams (Da Bears, the Lovable Losers, the ND Fighting Irish, and, most importantly, the Blackhawks).
