One tool that is fantastic for looking at standard archived radar, lightning, etc. data is WDSS-II from NSSL.  It is free for education/non-profit research use and has many, many features.  If you are doing something more specific and need to develop some code, spend some time poking around Github, you might find something you can use (please politely acknowledge the original author in anything published) and save yourself some heartache.

In reviewing severe events that had NWS products issued on them, the Iowa State VTEC display is a great resource and goes back through the 1990's.
